Spam Links On Search Engines Insert My Name and Book Name
Recently I became interested in Clayton Bailey's possible ability to control
search engine
links, such as on Google, Alltheweb and Altavista. I first noticed five or six
links on Google to my association with Bailey, and to two articles in which I
mentiond him. I first saw them in 2002 and they are still there. They are
on the first or second page of links under my name, which is a good position.
Also, I noticed that there are now no spam links mixed in with
legitimate links to Clayton Bailey.
How does he do it?
There are auto generated spam links on the search engines and some to my name.
But strangely almost all those which include my name in the texts also include
my 1985 book, The Great Rebellion. Those that don't include The Great Rebellion
mix in "Clayton Bailey," - Interview and Portfolio", Bernard
Pyron, Quixote ...and Recent American Ceramic Art ", Bernard Pyron,
Artforum, "An Interview With The..."
Bailey wrote derisive remarks in letters in the eighties to my book, The Great
Rebellion and he lists it in his 2000 book, Happenings. All these other
names and phrases taken off legitimate search engine links and put in
the spam links concern my association with Clayton Bailey.
"Quixote," for example is a magazine I published in during the sixties
and once included Bailey. "Recent American ceramic Art..Bernard Pyron"
is about my 1964 article which included Bailey, "The Tao and Dada of Recent
American Ceramic Art."which was in Artforum, 1964.
.I won't reproduce the porno spam links
but here are a few examples of the non-porn type:

"the great rebellion by bernard pyron phd" is inserted above within the text of
this link. The other phrases have no relationship to each other or to the
link http://av.rds.yahoo.com which becomes http://www.yahoo.com/ the

nonsense
and remote associations.
Below is a legitimate link put on by a used book seller to The Great Rebellion.
It does not have Ph.D. after my name. I do have such a degree though.

"Book" and "Clayton Bailey" are the only two topics in this list that are
included in the spam ad texts.
There is a huge number of these spam links under my name on Alltheweb
and Altavista.
I have tracked down many of these to two main web hosts and to a few
others. I have sent E Mail to some of them asking for the spam to be
removed, which might have been a mistake because Zone Alarm for a few
days was reporting blocked intruders, many of whom are blacklisted
web hosts.
So I became curious about how this came about. I found the web hosts
involved with this spam, but so far
that information hasn't helped answer why the focus on Clayton Bailey
in the spam links. The vast majority of the spam links have my name and
book name and if the
spammers try to select well known names or publications to include in
their links, that doesn't make sense. Neither me nor that book are
nearly as well known as Clay Bailey.
At this point I have no evidence as to how these spam links were generated
and put on the search engines, or who did it, except I know some of
the the web hosts involved
in putting the links on. Since Clayton Bailey is known among those
interested in
art on the West Coast, its possible that a spammer there has focused on
Bailey and my association with him (and my book). Its possible. but
less likely, that
the spammer who put the links on has no knowledge of Bailey or myself. Bernard
